JAMAL: its been hard man ive been trying to get a fight for myself but i cant seem to secure a good fight i could do a steve hardwick and bum around until the champ fights me but i dont wanna do that i want good fighters and ill fight anyone except the champ at the moment i want 2 more before i fight the champ WEBL: why do you thin its been so hard to get a fight? JAMAL: they're all scared i mean who wants to take on a guy who whips just about everyone he faces the only guys i havent beat are frank stonehouse and arse biscuit and both times i just got caught while i was winning the fight ive whipped the current champ ive whipped the current number one contender there aint many guys who i havent whipped and who wants to fight someone like that WEBL: who would you like to fight? By Teddy Foster Manchester based American Heavyweight and two-time World title challenger Steve Hardwick has already headed to the Raging Bulls Nevada training camp in preparation of what is widely expected to be his final push for the World Heavyweight Championship crown. An interesting bout between Hardwick and former three-times World Heavyweight Champion Engaman, who is also on the comeback trail, should see the winner in a strong position to challenge current champion Glimmerman, a loss will surely end the careers of both men. I had a chance to talk with Hardwick at the Nevada camp after a long session of altitude training. WeBL: Steve, we hear you were quite excited to ink Engaman, why was this fight so important to you? Steve: Engaman is one of the few fighters who I genuinely respect, both as a man and as a fighter, and he belongs to one of the few stand up kinda stables in the business, the Engadinian Gym. When Engaman retired for the third time I was disappointed, he is the last great that I have yet to face, because Ive been in with em all, Ruas, Specialist, Gellar, Stonehouse the lot, and it had always been in my mind to get in the ring with him before he finally hangs em up, and Im just happy that hes now given me the chance. WeBL: Do you think you can beat him? Steve: Definitely, Ive been in with some of the best and have beaten some of the best, I dont think Engamans style will trouble me too much, and I think my conditioning going into this fight will be the decisive factor as Engaman at his age will struggle to go the distance with me, I think Ill stop him before the 11th round. WeBL: Youre currently the #3 ranked contender in the division, Engaman is ranked #6 but will move into the 4th position just behind you should he win this weekend which it is widely predicted he will, should you overcome Engaman, will you challenge for Glimmermans title? Steve: Right now, I dont want to think too far ahead, Ive been guilty of doing that twice before in my career against Gellar and Specialist and I paid the price for it both times, I need to take a leaf out of Tito Ruas book and concentrate on the next fight and forget about the one after that. WeBL: Well, at 34 years of age and having been both the victor and victim of some of the most brutal fights weve seen in recent history you must have given some thought towards your future? Steve: Indeed I have, and I can reveal that I have two, maybe three fights left in me. The reason I have decided to make one last push for the title was based entirely on my performance against Glimmerman. Glimmerman is a fighter I should have beat, I went into that fight probably the most poorly prepared that I had ever been for a major fight, we went into camp for the Glimmerman fight extremely late and did little tactical work when we did eventually get there. Yet I managed to outbox Glimmerman for the majority of the first 9 rounds of the fight, I lost concentration in the second half of the fight end ended up dropping a very close decision. The same Glimmerman went onto biff a very jaded Frank Stonehouse around the ring to take the title. I can beat this guy with the right preparation, I just need to earn my shot at him again. WeBL: Jamal ONeil has had a few choice words for you this week, he says he wants the winner of this contest, do you see that panning out? [Hardwick laughs] Steve: Jamal can tongue my bung! Hes had a hard-on for me for quite a while now. Dont get me wrong, I dont have any personal issues with Jamal, hes just looking for a payday and I can relate to that, normally Id be quite happy to offer him that payday. However, unfortunately this fight is not likely to happen until HIPS Promotions give us what we want and what we are owed, Ill fight Jamal right after Ive fought Gellar, those are my very simple terms and conditions. WeBL: How do you see the current state of the division? Steve: Well, it has its strengths and its weaknesses. The retirements of DKs Skool of Hard knocks and AB Gym have opened the division right up, those two gyms had three of the most dominant champs of all time and also provided some very solid contenders, in their absence the division is a lot more even, which will make for some great fights. On the downside, their absence takes away a lot of the shine off of the title. WeBL: Finally, Steve, if there is to be a dominant champ, who do you think it will be? Steve: Well, Dean Cornell is back in the gym having been away from the sport for the most part of 6 years, but he is still only 24 now and is looking better than ever. By Teddy Foster Spectators from the general public and gathered media were left in shock today after witnessing Gleaming Steve Hardwick sent tumbling to the canvas by former long time rival Pugilist Specialist during what was billed as an open training session with some light sparring thrown in. Hardwick going through his final paces in preparation for Saturdays huge showdown at Madison Square Garden New York, was looking sharp and focussed in the ring and generally getting the better of the Toronto man until the former champ connected with a quick left hook to the temple that turned Hardwicks legs to jelly. A sheepish Hardwick quickly rose to his feet and brushed himself off as coach Jake La Motta called an end to the session. As Hardwick was ushered into a back room by La Motta, Specialist joked with the gathered press and onlookers Well it wouldnt be the first time Ive sent Steve spiralling. The fall doesnt bode well for Hardwick who will enter the last chance saloon this Saturday night in a bout against former two-times heavyweight champ and all-time great Engaman, that could potentially be his very last should he lose to the Australian warrior.

By Teddy Foster at Madison Square Garden, New York WeBL #3 ranked heavyweight contender Gleaming Steve Hardwick (25-8-0, 13 KOs) arrived at Madison Square Garden, New York today ahead of his much anticipated clash with former champion Engaman. Hardwick, who hasnt had the smoothest run up to the fight when he was sent to the canvas by former champion Pugilist Specialist in sparring less than a week ago, looked in good shape as he tipped the scales at 239lbs. Hardwicks last loss came against current champ Glimmerman, a fight that Hardwick let slip in the last 2 rounds, but has since strung three victories together including a comfortable points win over former contender Kid Gazz and has once again pushed himself back into contention. Bookies make Engaman the narrow favourite to beat Hardwick on Saturday night, and should they be correct it is widely predicted that Hardwick will finally hang his gloves up and call time on his career. Hardwick had time to field a few questions from the gathered media at the post weigh in press conference. WeBL: Steve, will you retire if Engaman beats you? Steve: Thats not a question that I feel I need to answer, Im going to beat Engaman tomorrow night, once I beat him I will sit down and talk with my manager about where we go from here, I expect to fight on after tomorrow night. WeBL: Steve, how was sparring with Specialist go? Steve: Im glad you asked, I want to take the time to thank Specialist for taking up my offer to come help train with me, when we signed to fight Engaman the first sparring partner we had in mind was Specialist, we wanted someone with good power, a solid chin and above all else excellent hand speed, he was the natural choice for sparring. In regards to the actual sparring, it went well, I know Specialist well, he hasnt lost much since retiring and he kept me on my toes. WeBL: Steve, youve been in some of the most dramatic fights in heavyweight history, what can fight fans expect tomorrow night? Steve: I can promise that tomorrow night I will deliver for the fans and all my beloved fans in my home town, here in New York, another great fight. Engaman cannot go the distance with me, hes not got the condition, he knows this and so hell be firing from the first bell, and Ill be ready for him. I want all of you to stay especially focused between rounds 3 and 5, because Im going to KO him around that mark, and then you can start asking him about his retirement plans and asking me about a potential title shot against the guy I should have beat. WeBL: Steve, will you fight Jamal ONeil if you beat Engaman? Steve: I read Jamal in the papers this week blowing off more gas, hes wasting his time, his rants are falling are falling on deaf ears, hes not in the same league as Steve Hardwick. JAMAL: great man i kept up my game plan to box him i thought hed open up and then i would knock him out he did open up a few times but the guys a tough man and he put up a good fight overall id rate myself a 6 out of 10 WEBL: what did you think of steve hardwick tonight? JAMAL: he beat a washed up old man id whip engaman in his prime and he caught the bit frank stonehouse shitted out when he smacked him around for 12 rounds hardwick is slow and weak and he knows that he couldnt handle someone as quick and crafty as myself and that is the sole reason he wont fight me WEBL: who are you looking at next? By Teddy Foster at ringside Gleaming Steve Hardwick rolled back the years tonight with a vintage display of accurate and powerful counter punching in 6 of the more punishing rounds of former champ and hall of famer Engamans illustrious career. The opening round saw Hardwick box with good movement against Engaman who seemed keen to get in close to rough the New Yorker up. However, round two saw the beginning of a ruthless onslaught from Hardwick who punched with considerable power and accuracy and bludgeoned the Australian at will as he came forward. After taking significant damage in rounds two and three, Engaman was sent to the canvas for the first of 3 knockdowns, the final occurring in round 6 when a desperate and badly battered Engaman significantly behind on the cards pressed hard to make something happen and walked onto a huge left uppercut from Hardwick (see photo) that put Engaman out for the count. An ecstatic Hardwick spoke to us only minutes after the victory. WeBL: Steve, how does that rank in amongst your achievements? Steve: I think that that is the greatest victory of my career, beating Specialist twice was great, and coming off the canvas 4 times to beat Scully was also satisfying, but Engaman is a two-time world champion and all-time great, a victory over him silences all my critics who have dogged my career saying that I was a bum who fought nothing but bums and only held victories over bums, nobody can say that anymore, its as simple as that. WeBL: You told us to concentrate on rounds 3-5 as that was when you were going to KO him, you almost managed to get him out of there in round 5! Steve: Yeah, the fight went tactically perfect, I have a huge height advantage over Engaman and I really wanted to make the most of that, when he started to plod forward trying to get inside I knew I could catch him on the back foot, he took some great shots in those rounds, I take my hat off to the guy, he showed a lot of heart to get up from those shots, hes a great fighter and a great man, a real warrior and a credit to our sport. WeBL: Where does this victory leave Steve Hardwick now? Steve: Well, a lot needs to be sorted out with the promoters and managers, but right now there are only two fights I want, I want the rematch that Gellar owes me, if the WeBL feel I should fight another contender after demolishing Engaman then that is the fight I want. But if the WeBL and Engadinian gym clear it then my next fight will be for the heavyweight title against Glimmerman. WeBL: Did you catch the undercard tonight? Does Jamal ONeil figure in your plans after his victory over Yamug? Steve: I didnt watch his fight no, but I heard he struggled in the middle rounds and looked spectacularly boring, hes a f**** pretender, he cant get in the ring with me, he should stick with the little boys, hes not getting his a kissed by me. I hear hes now pressing the champ for a shot after scraping past Yamug, what a joke, Ill fight him once HIPS Promotions delivers us the rematch with Gellar, once Ive had that fight then me and Jamal will talk. After an outstanding amatuer career and with a record that reads 86-12(21), including World Amatuer Champion(2003),Pan-Am Games Runner Up(2002),Commenwealth Gold Medalist, Lonny Byrd has told an assembling press, that he is ready to take on the world. He has decided to enter the proffesional ranks under the tutelage of former Heavyweight contendor turned promoter Brian Barnes. Never one short for words, Brian had this to say to us: Well Brian, here you are with another fighter who is ready to take aim at the world title, what can you tell us about this guy? Brian:Well for starters, the first thing that struck me about this guy was the sheer size and presence of him, but dont let that fool you, this man can move better than any other fighter ive ever seen inside a ring. I followed him for a few years in the amatuers and was always interested in signing this guy onto my books, hes also a very good businessman(winks at reporter) What can we expect to see from Lonny? By Teddy Foster WeBL #1 ranked contender Gleaming Steve Hardwick will face #4 ranked contender Furious Freddy Jones on the undercard of the March 7th title clash between Jamal O Neil and Glimmerman. Hardwick was forced to look elsewhere for a challenge after champion Glimmerman declined to fight the New Yorker who was widely expected to get the nod ahead of Jamal ONeil after his 6 round demolition of former champion and all-time great Engaman. Despite being the favourite to beat the Liverpool man, Hardwick has taken a considerable risk in agreeing to face Jones. A win will cement his current position at the top of the list of contenders and would almost certainly guarantee him a mandatory title fight against the winner of ONeil vs Glimmerman, by contrast a loss will end his career and see Jones steal Hardwicks right for a title shot right from under his nose. Jones, coming off of the back of a title eliminator loss to tough polish fighter Teemu Koivu, didnt hesitate for a minute to sign for the fight with Hardwick and sees the fight as the perfect opportunity to send a stern warning out to the rest of the division. An upbeat Hardwick gave us an interview in the lobby of the Midland Hotel in Manchester before flying out to his Nevada training camp the next day. WeBL: Steve, how disappointed were you that Glimmerman opted to fight Jamal over you? Steve: I was disappointed but more than anything else I was surprised, I really didnt think that the Glimmerman camp would select to fight Jamal over me, I am the number 1 ranked contender, Jamal is not, Im coming off the back of a 6 round destruction of one of the all-time greats, Jamal is not. Jamal is a loud mouth, he doesnt have any decent victories on his record, none of any real significance, if he beats Glimmerman hell be a paper champ, he would have gotten the title through the back door. WeBL: Freddy Jones will be your next opponent now, how did this fight come about? Steve: Well after Glimmerman declined to fight me I wanted to stay active, at my age its not good to be sat around for too long and if I had sat on my #1 ranking Id have just gone into any title fight a little too ring rusty and probably in poor shape. So we decided to take one more fight ahead of a potential title fight, we looked at several contenders including Golota and Yamug but it was always our intention to get the best available opponent, Jones and the Krink Gym in general are always open to offers so we approached him and his team and Jones agreed there and then, were happy with the deal and especially pleased with the opponent, forget Jamal because Jones is the best available contender out there right now. WeBL: Some people are surprised at your choice, at this stage in your career you will be risking a lot by taking on Jones, how much risk do you think he brings to the table? Steve: Its risky, very risky indeed, Ill not bull***t you, this could be my last fight, Ive been staring down the barrel of a gun for my last two fights now, and this game of Russian Roulette will end someday, I just hope and believe that its not March the 7th. Jones is a great fighter and a great man, were both based in the North-West of England, Manchester and Liverpool are obviously very close together and me and Jones have sparred with each other, hes a great fighter from a good gym and I look forward to the test that he will give me. WeBL: Do you know how you will fight him? Steve: Well, hes a tall fighter and not especially weak in any area, he has had problems going the distance against tougher opponents though, I think his biggest single weakness really is inexperience, he is still a young fighter, he made the mistake of opening up in his fight with Rahul and paid a heavy price, Ive still yet to see the Koivu fight but Jake has the tape. Ill probably mix it up against him, test his chin and hope I can catch him with one of my trademark Gleamers, test his movement and general ring smarts and his endurance, I think the fight will go twelve unless he opens up. WeBL: Engaman recently announced his decision to fight on, what do you think about that? Steve: I was surprised and disappointed for Engaman, I think he is slowly destroying his legacy by opting to fight onwards but more importantly he is really risking his health now. At the end of the day though, its Engamans decision, only he can make that decision, and its a decision that everyone must respect, I just really hope I dont have to commentate on an Engaman fight this time next year. The winner will meet Mennen for the North American Heavyweight Title. I talked to Mike yesterday and he sounded confident and ready. Mennen asserts that no other prospect has the speed to defeat him and that he will cruise to victory against whoever he meets next. He also told me that McCall and Metropolis have not fought the opposition that he has. He said that Darek Zaloga would have defeated either of those fighters. When asked about his low weight(Mennen is 194lbs) he by stating the succes of Featherfists and that he knocked out the 6'10 250lb George McCabe in training by taking the fight to him. I then got into talking to Mike about his upset of Darek Zaloga. Mennen is very proud of this achievment as he noted that his trainer Apollo Creed had originally slated for McCabe to fight Zaloga but when McCabe lost he was approached by Apollo. "He told me that the McCabe-Zaloga fight was off and that Hips told him that Zaloga should fight a member of our gym. I thought about it and said it was too big of an opprutuinity for me to pass up. I felt that if i could keep Zaloga outside I would win easily" Mennen was able to do that and won a clear decision over Zaloga. When asked about who he thinks his opponent will be next week he said "it doesnt matter but I think that McCall will win he is just to big and strong for Metropolis to handle over 12 rounds."

By Teddy Foster Steve Hardwick will sit down and discuss his future with trainer and coach Jake La Motta over the next week. It is widely expected that Hardwick will accept newly crowned champion Jamal ONeils offer of a title shot after stringing five wins together which included a 6 round destruction over all-time great Engaman and a 12 round decision win over highly rated and WeBL #4 ranked contender Freddy Jones. Hardwick, fighting on the undercard of the Glimmerman-ONeil title fight, set off at a fast pace against Jones who couldnt cope with Hardwicks movement and work-rate. The couple traded the middle rounds with Hardwick frequently opting to sit back and let Jones come forward whilst counter-punching with considerable power. The New Yorker couldnt budge his determined Liverpudlian challenger though who seemed to be unaffected by the same punches that saw Hardwick floor Engaman on three occasions. However, a tired Jones fielded some hard punches towards the end of the fight which, despite being able to remain on his feet, opened two nasty cuts below both eyes and some swelling around his left eye. All three judges made Hardwick the clear winner. Hardwick gave us an interview after the post-fight press conference. WeBL: Steve, he made it difficult for you out there tonight? Steve: He sure did, Jones is a tough competitor, I always believed that this fight would go twelve, Jones has one of the best chins in the division, I was throwing some of the hardest punches Ive ever thrown at a man in several of those rounds and the best I could manage was a few cuts, the guy can take a dig better than most I have fought. WeBL: How do you feel you boxed out there tonight? Steve: I think I did well against a man who wasnt going to allow himself to be stopped, I boxed to an early lead and once I had that early lead I knew from round 3 onwards that the fight was mine one way or another. My movement right now is as good as its ever been, people talk about my speed being poor but I more than make up for that in movement, I have the best movement of any fighter in our division. WeBL: You picked up a hand injury for your efforts tonight? Steve: Yeah its nothing major, no breakages or torn ligament damage, we consulted the ringside doctor after the bout and it seems Ive picked up some minor bruising to the tendons above my 4th and 5th metacarpal bones, nothing a few weeks rest wont heal. WeBL: Do you think you are in the best form of your career as many pundits now believe to be the case? Steve: Without question, Teddy! This is the best form of my career, I dont even credit opponents like Gellar and Ruas who hold victories over me, either of those two cats categorically couldnt handle what I bring to the table now. I know that I have previously faltered at the final hurdle at several occasions in my career leading to suspicions that Im not the real deal, but that can no longer be an issue. The pressure of knowing that every fight Ive had over this last year or so could very well be my last has brought the best out of Steve Hardwick. WeBL: Did you watch Jamals fight tonight? Steve: No, I never watch Jamal, he is a very boring fighter to watch and a fringe top 10 contender at best WeBL: Will you be fighting him next as is expected? Steve: Its more than likely that I will, yes. I hear hes already offered me the fight, it wasnt necessary though as I was getting the fight whether he wanted it or not after HIPS Promotions and the Engadinian Gym conspired together to prevent me, the rightful challenger, my mandatory against Glimmerman. Not that it surprised me any at all, Ive become accustomed to getting ck-shafted by HIPS Promotions. WeBL: Do you expect to have the fight with Jamal signed shortly? Steve: I have to sit down with Jake (La Motta) and discuss my future, we have a number of issues that need to be discussed, negotiations with HIPS Promotions will be difficult and possibly quite long but I am confident that the fight will be signed shortly. Steve: No, should this proposed fight with Jamal take place it will be the final fight of my career, regardless of the result I will be retiring after that fight, I am 35 years of age now, I have made millions in the ring so money is no longer an issue, I will do this for the glory, to cement my place in history as one of the pound for pound all-time greats. Apollo Creed and Hips ,who promote the 2 fighters, were simply not able to come to an agreement over the particulars of the fight causing its cancellation. Some of the reasons have rumored to be the percentage of the purse and even who would be introduced last. The associated press has learned that there still is a chance that these two will meet in the near future. The immediate fight has been declared for the North American Title. A unanimous member of the WeBl sanctioning body said "Mennen was and still is the number 1 contender for this title and we needed him to fight somebody for this title" Harry Lane sports a decent 9-5 record but he has failed against even mediocre competition. I completely couldnt get into rhythm. I was outboxed and hurt in early rounds. My mistake. After four rounds, my trainer told me to do something, because we were losing the fight big way. Posts: 2888 (03/13/04 03:57:30) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Hardwick to call press conference By Teddy Foster WeBL #1 ranked contender Gleaming Steve Hardwick will hold an official press conference on Monday the 15th of March at 12pm GMT at the Raging Bulls Gym in South Manchester, where it is widely expected that he will formerly announce his proposed title fight against newly crowned heavyweight champion Jamal ONeil. Negotiations between the two camps for what will be one of the biggest title showdowns in recent history are believed to have been very difficult with several tricky issues needing to be resolved. The date of the fight was a hazy area with Hardwick sustaining a hand injury in his 12 round unanimous victory over Freddy Jones, HIPS Promotions pushing for an early date while the Hardwick camping wanting their man to be allowed maximum time to recover. However, by far the biggest stumbling block is Hardwicks insistence on what he believes is his right to a rematch against Gellar, who is also under the HIPS Promotions banner. ONeil has been hungry to get Hardwick into the ring but Hardwick has refused to fight ONeil in what seems to be an attempt at blackmail. Its unknown whether or not this issue has been resolved or not but Hardwicks burning desire to fulfil a life long dream will more than likely see him cave in and accept the title fight with Jamal. One thing is for sure though, well find out on Monday!

The 6'9 Mennen easily won the first 9 rounds by staying on the outside and jabbing away at Lane. Mennen was landing around 40 punches a round. Once he knew that he had this fight in the bag Mennen started to pick his shots at Lane who spent the final rounds looking like he was tryin to beat up his neighbor. Mennen improved to 7-0 and Lane dropped to 9-6. Mennen will probably fight Salvador McCall next.
